Khimsar
is a fine tourist destination in Rajasthan. Khimsar is located
on the route between Jodhpur and Bikaner. Khimsar is about 92
kilometres from Jodhpur. An ideal destination to explore the
rustic charm of Rajasthan, Khimsar is famous for its fort. The
fort was originally built as protection, was later used by the
royal family as the residence in the 18th century.
Perched on the edge of the Great Thar Desert in the heart of
virgin India lies a unique 16th Century fort. Rao Karamsi-the
eighth prince of Rao Jodha, the founding Maharaja of Jodhpur
successfully launched the royal dynasty at Khimsar. Currently,
the 18th, 19th and 20th generations of the royal lineage still
reside in this historic fort.
This fort architecture offers great heterogeneity. Originally,
the fort walls, turrets and stables were built solely for war,
and were constructed around the beginning of the 16th Century.
Subsequently, by mid 18th century, the royal family moved in,
and a new 'zenana' or ladies' residence was erected with finely
carved windows in stone that provided 'purdah' or veil for ladies
in waiting. Thakur Onkar Singh, the present chief and the 17th
direct descendant of Rao Karamsi built himself a regal additional
wing in the 1940's. Today, this fort ranks amongst the premier
classified Heritage Hotels of India.

Fort
of Khimsar
The Fort of Khimsar has a lot of diversity in its architecture.
Prince Karamasi originally built the fort. The fort was originally
built as a protection of the village from foreign or neighboring
invasions. The walls, turrets, and stables were built around
16th century AD only for the purpose of war. By the middle of
the 18th century, the royal family moved into the fort when
a new zenana or ladies' residence was added to the existing
construction. The ladies residence has delicately carved windows
in stone built in order to provide purdah or veil for the ladies
in waiting. Thakur Onkar Singh, 17th direct descendant of Prince
Karamsi, the current owner and chief added a regal wing in the
1940's for himself. Later the fort was converted into Heritage
Hotel and ranks amongst the best Heritage Hotels of India. |
